Benjamin Uno 烏野ベンジャミン (née Benjamin Samuel Sheppard) is an artist based in Naarm (Melbourne) Australia. His art practice is informed by an ongoing connection with Japanese culture that commenced more than forty years ago.

Uno taught himself darkroom photography while still a teenager, before training as a printmaker. During the 1980s he was active in the anti-nuclear movement in Australia. Travelling to Japan in 1993, he learnt calligraphy under Ishihara Sotei shihan in Kagoshima. In 2000, attending the s11 Protests against the World Economic Forum in Melbourne, Uno used his camera as a witness to the confrontation, trying to capture not just the clash of individuals but also the workings of power on those people.

Guided by many disparate yet somehow logical influences – the deep silence of the Noh Theatre and Kyoto’s Sanjusangendo Temple, Bill Henson’s portraits of the 1980s and Christian Boltanski’s memorials, Antonioni’s Blow-Up and Marlene Dumas’ ink paintings, as well as the deep tradition of Japanese calligraphy itself – Uno has been refining his vision of the Heart Sutra as a sequence of portraits ever since.

Uno’s works are held in private collections in Australia and Japan, and also in the Australian National Gallery, Canberra.

 烏野ベンジャミン（旧姓ベンジャミン・サミュエル・シェパード）は、オーストラリアのナーム (メルボルン市) に拠点を置くアーティストです。彼の芸術の道は、40年以上前に始まった日本文化との深く継続的なつながりに支えられています。

烏野は、版画家としての訓練を受ける前に、10代の頃に暗室写真術を独学で学びました。1980年代、彼は核兵器の拡散に反対する抗議活動に積極的に参加した。1993年に日本に渡り、鹿児島で石原宗亭先生のもとで書道を学びました。

2000年、メルボルンで行われた世界経済フォーラムに対するs11抗議に参加した烏野は、カメラを対立の証人として使い、個人の衝突だけでなく、舞台裏の権力の働きも捉えようとしました。

烏野は、能楽堂や京都三十三間堂の深い静寂、1980年代後半のビル・ヘンソンのポートレート、クリスチャン・ボルタンスキーの記念碑、アントニオーニの「ブロウアップ」、マルレーネ・デュマの水墨画など、さまざまなものからインスピレーションを得て、それ以来、一連のポートレートとして般若心経のビジョンを洗練させてきました。

烏野の作品は、オーストラリアと日本の個人コレクション、およびキャンベラのオーストラリア国立美術館に所蔵されています。
